The Super K Generation: Heart Full Of Soul Part 1 (Laurie)

We have an oddity here, yes we do. This one comes to us from the Kasenetz-Katz team who brought you many pleasurable bubblegum sides like "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy," "1-2-3 Red Light," "Gimme Gimme Good Lovin'" (a particular fave), "Chewy Chewy," "Simon Says" and a whole lot more. C'mon, you know you love 'em.

You may recall a few months back when I reviewed the 1910 Fruitgum Co's "Baby Bret" as an example of the throwaway instrumental side these guys loved to mess around with. Now, here's a whole instrumental itself that someone thought might be a hit. So, we've got a throwaway of a throwaway, if you know what I mean. But for what it is, it's actually not shabby at all.

We open on a steady beat with a background of funky guitar. An organ swoons in a few lines of soloing. We're not talking tunefulness here necessarily, as the entire thing is basically a two-chord song. But a nice groove is established. Then, the organ grinds a bit and a Bo-Diddley beat style kicks in. The organ goes wild, the guitar gets funkier and a harmonica kicks on. This bit of sudden energy keeps up until the record fades at 2:43 minutes.

Should you run across a copy of this, you won't really need to mess with Part 2, as it's the steady groove of the first part stretched out for a full two minutes with only 19 seconds laid out for the jam session. See what I mean about throwing away throwaways? Maybe you don't. Oh well.
