It's Great Shakes Celebrates Vinyl Record Day!

Happy Friday and happy Vinyl Record Day. Or at least this Sunday, August 12th is Vinyl Record Day, thus commemorating 130 years of recorded sound. Yep, back in 1877, Thomas Edison made his first recording, a recitation of "Mary Had A Little Lamb".

To celebrate, several bloggers are getting together to do what they call a blogswarm. What that means is that a bunch of my fellow bloggers will also be making special Vinyl Record Day posts this weekend. The whole shebang is being organized by Jim Bartlett of the excellent The Hits Just Keep On Comin' blog. Check out the link for more information. Jeff has already made a couple of posts regarding the blogswarm, including who is participating. He'll be further updating us on just what everyone will be writing about this weekend.

And that brings me to my special celebratory topic. For the first time on It's Great Shakes, I'm trying my hand at a radio mix. Yup, today is the first edition (and, who knows, maybe the last) of It's Great Shakes Radio - Rockin' Rhythm and Soul.

Here's the playlist:

The Evergreens - Guitar Player (Chart)
Betty Lavette - What I Don't Know (Won't Hurt Me) (Calla)
Ted Taylor - Honey Lou (Ronn)
The Midnight Rebels - Broadway Walk (Atlantic)
Art Grayson - Better Hush (Congress)
Don Covay - Do The Bug (Cameo)
Don and Bob - Good Morning, Little Schoolgirl (Argo)
Shirley Gunter - Crazy Little Baby (Tender)
Marie and Rex - I Can't Sit Down (Carlton)
Little Junior Lewis - Can She Give Me Fever (Fury)
Harmonica George - Get In The Kitchen And Burn (Toddlin' Town)
Sonny Boy Williamson - One Way Out (Checker)

All are upbeat, rockin' 50's and 60's era rhythm and blues or soul. And all are taken from 45's that I've found this year while digging at record shows, flea markets, thrift shops, antique malls and the like. No eBay, sit at home and take at easy scores here.

Admittedly my technique for getting everything in one file was fairly rudimentary, so I'd like feedback on how it sounds. I'd also like to know how the divShare files are working for everyone. They're very convenient for me to work with. I'll continue using them, so long as they sound okay to everyone else.

Have a happy, vinyl weekend!

divShare is the best. Look forward to seeing more 128 Kbps tracks.
