Bobbie Graham - "Zoom, Widge and Wag" (Fontana)
Greetings and hello! It's been way too long since there's been a post in this blog, so here's a little something to attempt to convince you that this blog isn't dead. Todd's no doubt been very busy and I've been tied up a bit too, mostly trying to find another job. (Good luck, right?) Anyway, here's a little solid sender from England from one Bobbie Graham.
Bobbie Graham is best known as Britain's foremost session drummer. It's his drumming you hear on The Kinks' double-whammy "You Really Got Me" and "All Day and All of the Night." Other groups Graham has played with include Herman's Hermits, The Animals, Bert Elliot and the Fenmen, Dave Berry, Lulu and the Luvvers, Dusty Springfield and just about anyone who was anyone in British rock 'n' pop, with a few exceptions. One could say that Graham is to Britain what Hal Blaine is to the USA.
Graham recorded few solo singles and the record we present to you today is one of his first. But there is another notable presence on this record. This person started out as a session man and would later join The Yardbirds. Not long after that, he would win everlasting glory as the guitar man in Led Zeppelin. Yep, that's right, I'm talking about Jimmy Page. That's his guitar solo you hear toward the end of the record and I believe he is even co-credited with writing the song.
What should matter most, though, is that this is a rippin' cool instro which features leapin' guitar, poundin' drums, wailin' organ and a bit of sassy horn work all put into the mix. Sounds like a heapin' good stew if you ask me.
