Mitty Collier - I Can't Lose

Here's a great one for the weekend, "I Can't Lose" by Mitty Collier. I've wanted to blog this record since first finding it at a record show a couple of years ago. The trouble was, my first copy was rough enough that it skipped on the portable player I use to convert vinyl to digital. So, I kept my eyes open and, sure enough, another copy presented itself, recently.

Mitty Collier is probably best known for the string of records she made for the Chess label, beginning in 1961. She remained with the Chicago imprint long enough for them to release about 15 singles. In 1969, she signed with William Bell's Peachtree label out of Atlanta. She made five singles for Peachtree over the next couple of years.

"I Can't Lose" is a soul shouter. Mitty Collier's rough, gravely voice makes the record, as she challenges all comers to try and take her man. She doesn't care about their wigs or mini-skirts because, as she sings, "I can't lose with the stuff I use". I'd say that she's pretty convincing.

I don't know a whole lot about the other records that Collier made for Peachtree but this one is a pretty easy find. A nice copy shouldn't cost more than a few bucks. It's an example of a great record that can be had for peanuts.
